My artwork expands on the validity of the idea that Black people can and should be whatever we want to be, whenever and however we deem necessary, and that being Black and excellent or Black and mundane are equally as important in the liberation of the perceived “Black image.” Through fantastical themes I explore aspects of the Black experience through a world of my creation. Turning on its head the twisted notion that Black people exist as a disturbance in a realm that otherwise would be peaceful. Instead of portraying my subjects as the disturbances our conditioned world typically sees them as, I allow them to be the protagonists of their own stories. Using my lens as an extension of their will, these subjects return the viewer’s gaze, engaging them and inviting them into a world of liberation.
